Bubble Bobble Wiki

Touhou Spell Bubble (とうほうスペルバブル Tōhō Superu Baburu?) is a game developed by Taito for the Nintendo Switch. It is spinoff title in the Puzzle Bobble series featuring characters and other elements from the Touhou Project series of games. Unlike most games in the Puzzle Bobble series, Touhou Spell Bubble is a tile-matching puzzle game with elements of a rhythm game mixed in.

Gameplay[]

Being a Puzzle Bobble spinoff, the main core gameplay was mostly retained. However, one of the changes introduced is that a scoring system was implemented and the winner is judged by the one with the highest score. Getting flooded with bubbles will not immediately eliminate the player but instead counts all of the bubbles on their screen and converts it into the opponent's score.

Spell Cards from the Touhou series are introduced as special moves with varying effects, such as clearing certain parts of the player's board or converting some bubbles into a singular color. Each girl has different unlockable spell cards that can be used in any match, and the player can use theirs once their gauge is full in a match. A separate gauge is present that, when filled, executes Awakening, changing the board into one that is filled with bubbles arranged in different order to give the player an advantage. Similarly, a weaker version of Awakening is executed if the player got their board full of bubbles.

Another difference in gameplay compared to the traditional Puzzle Bobble games is that rhythm game elements were introduced. The timer for each match depends on the length of the song chosen. At certain parts of each song, the player is prompted to press the "A" button in tune to the music for points.

The game features a story mode that is fully voiced.
