Bubble Bobble Wiki

Fukio Mitsuji (三辻 富貴朗 Mitsuji Fukio?), also known as MTJ, was a Japanese game designer and artist. He is best known as the creator of the Bubble Bobble series of games, and served as a prominent game designer throughout the 1980s. While working at Taito, he was involved with a variety of titles, including Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Halley's Comet, Syvalion, and Darius II.

Mitsuji left Taito in 1989, and worked for some time as a freelancer. In 2000, he founded a game design school known as MTJ Game Designer's School (MTJゲームデザイナーズスクール Emu Tī Jei Gēmu Dezaināzu Sukūru?). By 2005, he had retired from video game development.

Mitsuji died in 2008 at the age of 48 from cardiopulmonary arrest.

  • The Special Bubble is informally referred to as the "MTJ Ball" in reference to Mitsuji's pseudonym. The "MTJ Ball" design is present as an extremely rare and powerful item in most games Mitsuji worked on while at Taito, including Rainbow Islands (as the Rainbow Special item), Halley's Comet, Syvalion, and Volfied.
  • Entering "MTJ" into the high score table in Bubble Bobble will cause the Cola item to spawn in later gameplay.
  • Round 2 of Bookshelf Forest in the hard mode of Bubble Bobble 4 Friends features a tribute to Mitsuji, with the terrain of the level arranged to spell "Dedicated to MTJ".
