Bubble Bobble is a long-running game franchise which has amassed over 30 games and two spin-offs. The series has been developed and published by the Taito Corporation, and later by their parent company, Square Enix. The franchise's core series is the titular Bubble Bobble series, while two others, the Rainbow Islands series and the Puzzle Bobble series being spinoffs from the core titles. The Bubble Bobble franchise is one of the most ported game franchises ever, with the original appearing on over 19 different platforms, and the sequel, Rainbow Islands, appearing on 17 different ones. While the first game, Chack'n Pop, was originally a stand-alone game, it has been retroactively absorbed into the Bubble Bobble series. The series proper started with Bubble Bobble.

Trivia[]

  • A video on Bub's Broadcast creates a branching timeline for the series, showing how the games are related to one another. However, given that Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! makes reference to the events of previous Puzzle Bobble games, the Bubble Symphony incarnations of Peb and Pab being referenced alongside the parents from the original Bubble Bobble, and other discrepancies, the continuity of the series appears to be rather loose, with the timeline appearing to exist moreso to show how the original stories of the games in the series link up rather than a strict order of events in the series' lore.
    • The "first generation" branch begins with Bubble Bobble, followed by Rainbow Islands, then branches off into either Parasol Stars or Bubble Memories. Bubble Bobble Part 2 takes place a century after Rainbow Islands, following from either Parasol Stars and Bubble Memories.
    • The "second generation" branch splits off after Bubble Bobble, set 100 years later, with the characters from Bubble Symphony appearing as the grandchildren of the original Bub and Bob. It is explained that the differences in backstory between the first game and Bubble Symphony can be interpreted with the latter serving as a "what if" retelling. After that, Bust-A-Move Islands, Puzzle Bobble 3D: Vacation Odyssey, and Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! all take place.
    • The rest of the games covered are stated to be "parallel world" stories, which includes the first four Puzzle Bobble games, both versions of Super Puzzle Bobble, Space Bust-A-Move, Bubblen March, and Bubble Bobble 4 Friends.
